The Mud

Where it all started

It started with the mud. Steve is a dedicated mudlark — one of a rare breed who walk the foreshore of the Thames at low tide, eyes down, reading the finding lines. Clay pipes. Coins. Buckles. Pottery shards. Fragments of lives lived centuries ago, given back by the river one tide at a time.

That experience taught Steve to read objects — to spot something genuine from across a room, to know a curve, a colour, a texture that tells you this is the real thing. It’s a skill that translates directly to the antiques world, where knowing what you’re looking at is everything.

That eye for the genuine article — that’s the foundation of this whole collection.

Broadcast across Europe, the United States and beyond, the show followed Steve and Johnny Vaughan from XFM Radio as they explored the Thames foreshore, piecing together the stories behind extraordinary historical objects.
